Cupping Therapy

Release Tension. Restore Movement.

A traditional therapy that uses gentle suction to help relieve muscle tension, promote circulation, and support the body’s natural recovery process.

What Is Cupping?

Cupping is a therapeutic technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves placing glass or silicone cups on the skin to create gentle suction. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissues, helping increase local circulation, loosen tight muscles, and relieve areas of tension.

Depending on your needs, cups may remain stationary or be gently moved across the treatment area.

At Shen Point, cupping may be used on its own or incorporated into an acupuncture treatment depending on your individual needs.

Benefits of Cupping

RELIEVES MUSCLE TENSION

Helps loosen tight, overworked muscles and ease areas of stiffness.

SUPPORTS CIRCULATION

Encourages increased blood flow to the area being treated.

SUPPORTS RECOVERY

Can be a helpful addition for muscle soreness, physical activity, and recovery.

PROMOTES RELAXATION

The gentle pulling sensation can help relax areas where the body tends to hold tension.

What to Expect

Your session begins with massage oil applied to the treatment area, allowing the cups to be placed comfortably and moved smoothly when needed. The cups create a gentle pulling sensation as the tissues lift and may remain stationary or be gently moved across areas of tension.

After the cups are removed, a light massage is used to gently relax the muscles, ease remaining tension, and encourage circulation through the treated area.

Cupping should not be painful, and many patients find the treatment deeply relaxing

You may notice temporary circular marks and some tenderness in the treated areas. Most people can return to their normal activities afterward.

What do Cupping Marks Mean?

The circular marks that can appear after cupping are a normal response to the suction created by the cups. As the tissues are gently lifted, small blood vessels near the surface of the skin can produce temporary discoloration.

Marks can range from light pink or red to deeper red or purple and may vary from one area of the body to another. Darker marks do not necessarily mean that an area has more “toxins” or that something is wrong. The appearance of the marks can be influenced by the intensity and duration of suction, the area treated, and individual skin and tissue response.

How Long Do Cupping Marks Last?

Cupping marks typically begin to fade within a few days and may take up to one to two weeks to completely disappear. How long they last can vary depending on the area treated, the level and duration of suction, and your individual skin and tissue response.

The marks are temporary and will gradually lighten as the area recovers.

The color and intensity of cupping marks can vary from person to person.

If you have an upcoming event, photos, or an occasion where you would prefer not to have visible marks, let us know before your treatment so we can adjust the approach accordingly.
