Traditional Chinese Medicine
A Whole-Body Approach to Health
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a centuries-old system of medicine that views the body as an interconnected whole. It uses therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and cupping to support the body's natural ability to heal and maintain well-being.
What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a comprehensive system of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years. Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, TCM looks at how different aspects of the body work together and considers the individual as a whole.
TCM uses several therapeutic approaches, including acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and movement practices. At Shen Point, acupuncture and cupping are the primary TCM therapies offered as part of personalized care.
How Does TCM View the Body?
Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body as an interconnected system rather than a collection of separate parts. Physical health, emotions, digestion, sleep, energy, and other aspects of well-being are considered part of the same picture.
TCM uses concepts such as Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang to understand how the body is functioning and where patterns of imbalance may be present.
Understanding the Foundations
TCM uses several foundational concepts to describe how the body functions and maintains balance.
QI
Often translated as “vital energy,” Qi refers to the functional activity that supports the body's processes.
BLOOD
In TCM, Blood refers to more than its physical definition. It is considered important for nourishing and supporting the tissues and organs.
YIN
Yin represents the cooling, nourishing and restorative aspects of the body.
YANG
Yang represents the warming, active and making aspects of the body.
The TCM Organ Systems
In TCM, organ systems are understood as functional networks that describe relationships between different aspects of the body. They do not correspond exactly to the anatomical organs described in Western medicine.
For example, the TCM Liver is associated with the smooth movement of Qi and is considered in relation to emotions, digestion, menstruation, and other functions. The TCM Spleen is associated with digestion, nourishment, and the production of Qi and Blood.
These systems help guide how a practitioner understands patterns within the body and develops an individualized treatment approach.
How Does TCM Influence Your Treatment?
Your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and individual presentation are considered together when developing a treatment approach. TCM helps identify patterns of imbalance so your care can be personalized to your unique needs.
